Homer at the Oche by Johnny

Greetings from Bangkok, hopefully finished with our cold snap. Yes, we have a cold winter season. Temps in the past weeks at night and early morning dipped way down into the mid to upper teens – Celsius – that would be upper sixties for those using Fahrenheit. I don’t like cold weather.

The Simpsons TV program was a favorite of mine until they went woke. My long-time good friend JP O’Reilly (formerly known as Jake among other monickers we won’t mention) had the popular Bangkok Simpsons theme bar “Flaming Moe’s” in the Queen’s Park Plaza on Sukhumvit Soi 22 now sadly all gone.

Flaming Moe’s was my favorite go-to darts bar back in its day. You could always find someone on the “501 Challenge Dartboard.” First, sign your name on the whiteboard, your turn and you’re up to score the next match, then you play that game’s winning player. A great system, if you we’re serious about improving your darts game & sharpening your out-numbers math skills.

Flaming Moe’s is what really got me into drawing cartoons. O’Reilly wanted all kinds of Simpson characters for advertising, menus and more. Simpsons’ cartoonist, Matt Groening is brilliant but his great cartoons, at the time were only available really small online. Trying to copy and re-size for anything print size only produced a totally pixelated, blurred image. So started my cartooning hobby.

As an ass-backwards wannabe cartoonist, I draw free-hand using a wireless mouse and an old out-of-date graphics program. I’m self-taught and tried to use a draw pad. That didn’t go well. I’m an old guy. But, the toons & photos on DT & JJJ are mine, unless otherwise credited.

Do you play darts with a ‘Homer’ or have a ‘Homer’ on your darts team? Or . . . are you yourself a ‘Homer at the oche?’ Until next report, stay well and good darts! – Johnny
